Ask any coffee lover if the type of water matters in their morning  cup of coffee (or hourly)  and just about everyone will say “yes”. There are three types of water available to home :  affordable filtered water, tap (town) and expensive bottled water.

For this purpose (making coffee) bottled water is indeed a waste of money and resources, especially since numerous bottled waters are basically filtered (hopefully) town water that has been re-packaged and marketed. Nothing wrong with that but their are better alternatives.

Two camps “Tap  Water Rules versus “Filtered Water Mob”.

If your spending good money on buying quality coffee beans from a much loved coffee roasting house  than using a filtered water make perfect sense.  Coffee purchased from specialty coffee suppliers can cost upto $100 a kilogram for Hawaiian Kona (see wikipedia).

Town water (tap water) has a taste of its own and depending on supplier it may have a fair amount of chlorine added which has a strong-ish taste to say the least. Coffee and more particularly the complex and subtitle flavors it often has are best served in filtered water to enjoy the taste of the coffee as it was meant to be.

Why bother filtering your coffee if you not going to filter your water. Using town water will require more maintenance as tap water contains calcium and that along with other salts etc start to block up parts of the typical espresso machine if you are using filtered water greatly reduces maintenance requirements.

This is a difficult question to answer so we think you could ask yourself a series of questions about how do you use water.

1. How much water does your household drink are you big water drinkers  ?
Most people drink should drink at least 6-8 cups (glasses) a day but that really that will depend on personal circumstances, activity levels, age and environment.

2. What sort of budget did you have in mind ?
An under sink system now start at $110 for a great 3 stage water filter

3. Does your budget matches your expectation ?
Hopeful our latest price reductions of saving $200 we can now offer them at $490 plus shipping for a reverse osmosis system)

4. Is removing fluoride important to you ?You can learn more about fluoride and what the ADA (US) we have to say about the matter in our opinion blog post written a few months ago this year.

5. Do you have the space for an under-sink water filter system ?
You will need to have access to you underneath your sink area.

6. Will you self install or need an expert ?
If you can self install great other contact us for more information about how to find a suitable person to help

If you have some spare time I believe it is  worth reading an interesting publication produced the ADA (American Dental Association).

It is a 70+ page PDF document called Fluoridation Facts  it provides some interesting information about fluoride and what the recommend.

For example this is a table that is on page 25 suggests that infants should get very close to 0 ZERO fluoride.

ADA Fluoride Table

The following is a quote for page 26. In my opinion suggests that children get a lot fluoride through drinking tap water.

Children living in a community with water fluoridation get a portion of their daily fluoride intake from fluoridated water and a portion from dietary sources which would include food and other beverages.

When considering water fluoridation, an individual must consume one liter of water fluoridated at 1 part per million (1 ppm) to receive 1 milligram (1 mg) of fluoride.

Children under six years of age, on average, consume less than one-half liter of drinking water a day.

Therefore, children under six years of age would consume, on average, less than 0.5 mg of fluoride a day from drinking optimally fluoridated water (at 1 ppm)

That is not even taking into account another statement that studies show children who brush their teeth twice daily are swallowing on average “0.6mg of fluoride” as well. You can reduce this unnecessary expose to fluoride by using  a reverse osmosis system.

Filter water before you drink it your body will thank you. Most people are unaware of what is in their water and why they should filter water before drinking it. This include people who have the water supplied by the local authority or private water vendors. One way you take the guess work is use a quality filter to clean up your water.

A water filter can removes impurities from water by means of a fine physical barrier, a chemical process or a biological process to filter water.
Filters cleanse or filter water to different extents for purposes like irrigation, drinking water, aquariums, and swimming pools. At Filter Water we are concerned with helping people get access to clean water.

Typical Water will contain most if not all of the following impurities and containment’s at various levels depending on your location :

Typical Water Impurities

AmmoniumGardia cystsSalt
Arsenic +3 +5Glucose
Silicate
BicarbonateIronSilver
CadmiumLeadSodium Chloride
CalciumMercurySodium fluoride
Chlorinated PesticideNickelSodium Nitrate
CopperNickel sulphateSucrose
E.coli BacteriaNitrateSulfate
PotassiumZinc

The are various option for removing these and really depends on the source of the water. As a minimum we recommend the use a basic 3 Stage Water Filter or a complete 5 Stage Reverse Osmosis System.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane. RO can remove many types of molecules and ions from solutions and is used in both industrial processes and in producing potable (clean drinkable) water.  The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be “selective,” this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as the solvent) to pass freely.

“Tap Water vs Reverse Osmosis” (RO) – Filter Water

Here is a great (but slightly geeky video) explaining the difference between

And yet another way of looking at the video is here on this Youtube link

Filter Water with a cartridges not your kidneys
Even in Australia with ultimately if you do not filter your water you will end up being the human water filter instead.
Take a look at this before and after picture of water filters cartridges.

You should purchase your 3 Stage Water Filter , 5 Stage Water Filter or Replace Cartridges
